Heritage House is a total renovation (to the studs) of a 1912 home located near the original historic Hastings Mill. The clients desired for a gradient from old to new and this was realized in a procession that starts with traces of the existing house - remade wainscotting and new builtin bench which moves into more contemporary details and elements as one moves through the enfilade rooms. Like with many of our projects, there is a strong emphasis placed on materiality and allowing materials to patina gracefully with time. The original fir floors were retained in many areas, and re-sanded and stained to a light airy finish, while a wood burning insert was installed in a rebuilt brick fireplace. The new kitchen and bathroom were tiled quarry brick and handmade Japanese ceramic tiles respectively. Many areas were clad with Fir to create a sense of warmth and coziness.
